Olusegun Matthew Okikiola Aremu Obasanjo, GCFR, an army engineer, was a commander during the Nigerian Civil War which ended in January 1970.

He served as the Chief of Staff Supreme Headquarters after the 1975 coup which overthrew General Yakubu Gowon brought to power Brigadier Murtala Muhammed. Obasanjo assumed the role of military Head of State after Muhammed's assassination in February 1976.

He ceded power to the elected civilian administration of President Shehu Shagari in October 1979.

Obasanjo was charged with and convicted of treason by the military government led by General Sani Abacha. His 1995 death sentence was commuted to life imprisonment and he was released after Abacha's death in June 1998 by the military Head of State General Abdulsalami Abubakar.

Obasanjo was elected to the presidency the following year and left office in May 2007 after serving two terms.

He became a Doctor of Philosophy in Christian Theology in 2018 after he embarked on studies at the National Open University of Nigeria (NOUN).
